Senior Finds Passion in Italy — All From SU’s Campus

The Covid-19 pandemic forced 体育买球 University to find other ways for students to complete their study-abroad experiences through the Global Opportunities program.

Nicole Principe ’21 originally planned to travel to Florence, Italy, for a six-week program in May 2020. As a graphic design major, Principe was particularly interested in learning more about Italian art. Unable to travel due to Covid restrictions, Principe still found herself in Italy — just virtually.

During her remote GO program, Principe studied with the Sant’Anna Institute, Sorrento, Italy, during the winter break of 2021, which paired her with the SyArt Gallery for an internship. Principe completed several graphic design projects for the gallery, including a virtual tour of its artwork debuting in 2021, which was promoted on the SyArt Gallery’s social media platforms.

“The virtual tour was one of my favorite projects and it was super cool to see the gallery promote it so widely,” Principe said.

The biggest challenge Principe faced in completing a remote study-abroad experience was the time difference — a common refrain heard from SU’s remote GO students. Principe said the issue just required an extra dose of time management and patience.

Because Italy is six hours ahead, Principe said she “had to adjust and work earlier in the day so I could get feedback from my professional partner and advisor.”

Despite the loss of Principe’s original plans to travel to Italy, she said her virtual Sorrento experience has opened her eyes to a new career option. Upon her graduation, Principe is considering finding a job in a museum as a graphic designer.
