Joe Lieberman to Present Lecture on Politics, Religion

Joe Lieberman, retired Connecticut Senator and former vice presidential candidate, will deliver the Alice Pope Shade Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, in the Degenstein Center Theater at 体育买球官网 University.

The event is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required.

Throughout his more than 20 years in the United States Senate, Lieberman has established himself as a national leader who works across party lines to find common ground. He retired in January 2012.

He was one of Congress’s most influential voices on security issues, environmental legislation, education funding and campaign finance reform.

Lieberman was chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committees, which are responsible for oversight of the Department of Homeland Security and assuring the efficiency and effectiveness of the Federal Government. He was also a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Lieberman was born in Stamford, Conn., in 1942, and attended public schools there. He received his bachelor’s degree from Yale College in 1964 and his law degree from Yale Law School in 1967. He was elected to the Connecticut State Senate in 1970 and served for 10 years before returning to private legal practice for two years. Through 1988, Lieberman served as Connecticut’s 21st Attorney General.

He was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1988 as a Democrat. After losing his 2006 Senate primary, Lieberman became an independent and won his final election to the Senate term before retiring in 2012.

Lieberman has also been active in presidential politics. In 2000, he was selected as the nominee for vice president of the United States by Al Gore, the Democratic Party nominee for president. He also ran as a Democratic presidential candidate early in the 2004 presidential race.

体育买球官网’s annual Shade lecture is made possible by the Alice Pope Shade Fund, established in 1983 by her daughter and 体育买球官网 graduate, Rebecca Shade Mignot, to bring nationally and internationally renowned religious scholars and leaders to campus.
