Student-Edited Magazine Nominated for Prestigious Literary Prize

Two works of literature from a 体育买球官网 University student-edited issue of Barrelhouse literary magazine have been nominated for the prestigious Pushcart Prize, an American literary prize that honors the best poetry, short fiction and essays published by small presses.

Students in 体育买球官网’s publishing and editing program edited the online Villains edition of Barrelhouse during a seven-week project with professional-in-residence Dave Housley, who was on campus last fall.

The pieces nominated for the Pushcart Prize are The Hook, by Paul Crenshaw, and the poem Apples, by Amber Shockley.

“These nominations are a major accomplishment for a literary publication,” said Laurence Roth, professor of English and co-head of the Department of English and Creative Writing at 体育买球官网 University. “That our students chose and edited the works that were nominated, and all the others that were included in this publication, makes this a meaningful recognition of the quality and ambition of our program.”

Barrelhouse is an independent non-profit literary organization. It is not affiliated with a university or writing program.
