There’s Something Special About Being First

Annual First-Gen College Celebration

In 2017, the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) and the Center for First-Generation Student Success launched the inaugural First-Generation College Celebration! On Nov. 8, colleges and universities celebrate the success of first-generation college students, faculty and staff.

Three people are shown in a vertically aligned composite image. The left and right individuals, a woman with long hair and a woman with shoulder-length hair, smile warmly. The center person, with a bowl haircut, smirks slightly. All stand in sunlit settings.

“Language Lane was an event that made such an impression on me because, as a first-generation American student from the Dominican Republic, it was nice to see a space dedicated to inclusion.”

“Without TRiO, I don’t think I would have been able to accomplish as much as I have. I am grateful for the opportunities and knowledge TRiO has given me. My mentor’s guidance helped me recognize my potential and reaffirm my place in college. And, my determination, hard work, and resilience have displayed my dedication to succeed.”
