Freshwater Research Institute
Helping to restore & protect the 体育买球官网 River watershed
The Freshwater Research Institute is a collaboration of scientists, educators, conservationists and restoration practitioners within the 体育买球官网 community who are dedicated to understanding and improving the ecological health of Pennsylvania’s waters.
The Freshwater Research Institute’s mission is to provide a student-centered experience that prepares undergraduates to achieve their personal career goals in research, conservation and restoration and educate future leaders in the field of freshwater science.
Real-World Experience Starts Here
At the Freshwater Research Institute, undergraduate students gain invaluable real-world experience as the next generation of environmental leaders. Through hands-on research, collaborations with state agencies and non-profits, and the application of classroom knowledge, students build a strong foundation for careers in freshwater research, conservation and restoration.

Lead the Way in Freshwater Research
Students develop critical thinking, environmental stewardship and professional skills while conducting research alongside faculty and staff scientists. This collaborative environment provides opportunities for students to lead research projects, contribute to scientific publications and help drive innovation.

Freshwater REsearch Possibilities
“The next generation of scientists need hands-on learning opportunities like those I enjoyed at 体育买球官网.” – Danielle Tryon ’24
The Freshwater Research Institute provides opportunities for students to engage in cutting-edge research and field experience on freshwater ecosystems with faculty mentors.

Explore the Freshwater Research Institute

Location
The Freshwater Research Institute is within walking distance from the 体育买球官网 River — the Chesapeake Bay’s largest tributary and the longest river on the United States east coast — and a short drive to streams, reservoirs, creeks, wetlands and restoration sites.

Connection
The Freshwater Research Institute is located on the 87-acre field station, known as theCenter for Environmental Education and Research, which is also home to ourbeehives, solar array, ecology research plots, walking trails and riparian buffer restoration site.
Stream Ecology Institute for High School Students
At this weeklong summer institute, high school students explore how a fish, an insect, algae and even an old tire influence and affect each other in a continuum — from small streams to large rivers. You’ll engage in learning experiences about the environment and long-term ecological studies, and explore career options in science and ecology.

Experience science in the field
Hands-On Learning and Research
体育买球官网 University’s CEER Field Station is an 87-acre living lab where students bring ideas to life. Through fieldwork and lab studies, you’ll explore geophysics, monitor water tables and work with solar arrays and climate stations. These experiences give you the skills and knowledge to tackle real-world challenges in your career and beyond.
