Learning Goals

Students graduating with a Music Production major will:

• Music Theory – Acquire foundational skills in musicianship and music theory.
• Music History – Develop a foundational understanding of classical and popular music traditions and their relationships to culture and society.
• Music Performance – Achieve proficiency on a primary instrument through focused solo study and collaborative ensemble experiences
• Music Production – Gain a comprehensive understanding of industry-standard technologies, tools, and practices in audio engineering and recording, and apply these skills to produce creative, broadcast-quality music
• Music Composition – Compose and arrange original works with a focus on contemporary and commercial music composition while cultivating an informed and authentic personal aesthetic vision

Major in Music Production

Music students who desire a specialized emphasis in the production of commercial recorded music may choose this degree option. Accepted majors must possess skills in a standard performance area and also demonstrate potential as music composers and/or producers through a portfolio of notated and/or recorded works. Students will take part in a comprehensive program focusing on both technical and creative skills, giving students hands-on experience producing and composing music in state-of-the-art facilities using industry-standard studio production tools and techniques. Students will also gain a solid foundation in fundamental musicianship including theory, ear training, keyboard, and performance skills on their primary instrument. In addition, students will have opportunities to explore creative synthesis, sampling, songwriting, and scoring for film and media. These skills and experiences will be given important context through courses covering the business elements of the modern music industry and entrepreneurial skills that aim to prepare students for a variety of careers and professional activities in the commercial music production industry. Students who complete this program may pursue careers such as a studio engineer and producer, recording artist, or a composer for film and media. Candidates complete the university Central Curriculum requirements, along with the following program requirements. Each course in the program requirements must be completed with a minimum grade of C-.’ Students must conclude the program with a cumulative GPA of 3.0.

  • Lessons carry one or two semester hours of credit. Students earn credit of one semester hour for a weekly half-hour lesson. Bachelor of Music Production majors take 6 semesters of one-hour lessons on their major instrument, as well as 4 semesters of half-hour lessons in composition.
  • A fee is charged per semester for individual lessons that are not stated specifically as curricular requirements (nonmajors or extra lessons for majors). Such lessons are contingent upon faculty availability within the normal teaching load.
