Jazz Ensemble To Present Concert

The Jazz Ensemble will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 14, in Stretansky Concert Hall in the Cunningham Center for Music and Art.

Under the direction of Kevin Henry, adjunct faculty in music, the Jazz Ensemble will perform classic and modern works made popular by big bands such as the Count Basie Band, Bob Mintzer Big Band, Stan Kenton Orchestra and Drew Zaremba and the CJR Orchestra.

Special guest, Marcos Krieger, associate professor of music, will be featured on the accordion in a performance of Rick Hirsch’s Tonight We Tango.

Choral Ensembles To Present Combined Concert

The Choir, Chorale and Chamber Singers will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 15, in Stretansky Concert Hall in the Cunningham Center for Music and Art.

The concert, Spring into Song, will feature the university’s choral ensembles in an evening of choral music featuring a varied program of traditional and contemporary pieces.

The combined ensembles, under the direction of Amy Voorhees, assistant professor of music, and Cody Miller, adjunct faculty in music, will perform works by Anders Edenroth, Susan LaBarr, John Rutter and more.

Theatre To Present Pride and Prejudice

The Department of Theatre will present Pride and Prejudice adapted by Kate Hamill at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 21 and 22, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 23, in Degenstein Center Theater in the Charles B. Degenstein Campus Center.

Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, a tale of latent love, has never felt so theatrical, so full of life than it does in Hamill’s effervescent adaptation. The outspoken Lizzy Bennet is determined to never marry, despite mounting pressure from society. But can she resist love, especially when that vaguely handsome, mildly amusing and impossibly aggravating Mr. Darcy keeps popping up at every turn?

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and non-SU students and can be purchased in the box office or online. Located in the Degenstein Center Theater lobby, the box office is open Monday through Friday, noon to 5 p.m. during the academic year. It is closed on holidays and during university breaks.

Alumna To Lecture on Publishing

Jessica Nirvana Ram ’18 will present Making Public: Publications Launch at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, in Isaacs Auditorium in Seibert Hall.

Her lecture is part of the Seavey Visiting Writers Series.

A Pushcart Prize nominee, Ram is an Indo-Guyanese poet and essayist. She is the 2022–23 Stadler Fellow in Literary Arts Administration at Bucknell University. Recently completing her master’s degree in fine arts at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, she is currently a poetry reader at Okay Donkey Mag.

Her work – about inheritance, expectations and radical self-love – appears in Glass: A Journal of Poetry, Hayden’s Ferry Review, HAD and Honey Literary, among others. Her chapbook in the aftermath is forthcoming from Porkbelly Press.

Instrumental Ensembles To Present Concert

The University Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 29, in Stretansky Concert Hall.

The Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Eric L. Hinton, conductor, will perform wind band works by diverse group of composers including Samuel Adler, Luis Serrano Alarcon, David Biedenbender, W.C. Handy, Bin Kaneda and Pinkzebra.

This is the final Symphonic Band and Wind concert of the year.
