President Jonathan Green is a transformative leader who has guided 体育买球 University through significant strategic growth, with a focus on student success and institutional innovation. His leadership has strengthened academic and support resources, revitalized the university’s brand, expanded access for underrepresented students, and driven the most successful fundraising campaign in 体育买球’s history.
Strategic Leadership
- Formed theSU 2026: Strategic Planin 2019 following university-wide collaboration, including improvements to student retention and workforce collaboration.
- Implemented the university’s first brand: Be Impossible To Ignore, developed with and embraced by prospective students and the university community.
- Launched and completed theGive Rise campaign, raising a record-breaking$185 millionby 2023.
Expanding Access & Student Support
- Joined theAmerican Talent Initiative in 2019, committing to enroll more talented students from low- and moderate-income backgrounds. 体育买球 is among the few ATI members to meet its commitment.
- Established aTRIO Student Support Services federally funded programand the state-funded REACH Scholars program for first-generation and low-income students.
- Created theBurke Hawk Hub, a central resource center for student assistance.
Academic Innovation & Campus Transformations
- Created the Innovation Center, The Build Collaborative,and a Makerspace to spur enrollment strategies, revenue generation, and experiential learning.
- Expanded the Freshwater Research Institute, including a partnership with the Chesapeake Conservancy that collaborates on research, restoration projects, internships, and preparing students for the workforce.
- Invested in significant campus renovations, including the expansion of the Degenstein Campus Center and improvements to several academic and athletic facilities.
- Created a Downtown Center on Market Street to strengthen university–community connections, and added a 54-acreretreat centerfor academic, research, and cocurricular programs.
National Leader in Higher Education
Green is board chair of the Annapolis Group, a board member of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU), immediate past-chair and a board member of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP), and chair of the ALL IN Presidents’ Council. In 2022, Governor Wolf appointed him to the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) board of directors, where he is a member of the executive committee and chairs the nominating committee.
In 2022 and 2023, Green was named to City & State Pennsylvania’s Higher Education Power 100. In 2020, College & University Public Relations and Associated Professionals (CUPRAP) honored him with the Arthur V. Ciervo Award for advancing the understanding of higher education. Green has presented on various higher education topics for organizations including the American Talent Initiative, the Council of Independent Colleges and the American Council on Education.

Ciervo Award from College & University Public Relations and Associated Professionals (CUPRAP) for his impactful efforts in promoting the understanding of higher education, notably through his influential blog on the value of liberal arts education and current challenges in the field.

Additional Background
Prior to 体育买球, Green spent six years as provost and dean of the faculty at Illinois Wesleyan University, where he received the inaugural award for outstanding academic advisor in 2016. He also served as dean of the college and vice president for academic affairs at Sweet Briar College, where he received the 1999 Award for Excellence in Teaching. He also served as a board member of the American Conference of Academic Deans.
Accomplished Composer & Author
As a composer, he is the author of more than 160 musical compositions and has received awards from ASCAP, the North Carolina Arts Council and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. His compositions include numerous songs, choral works, three piano concertos and seven symphonies. Among his many commissions isRiding the Winds of December, which was performed by the school children of Dare County as part of the First Flight Centennial Celebration. His works have been published by C. Alan Publications, Bernel Editions, Ltd. and Treble Clef Press.

Education
Green earned a Doctor of Musical Arts in conducting at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where he was a University Excellence Fellow and earned a master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts where he was an Ornest Fellow. He completed additional studies at Oxford University and Chautauqua Institution and earned a Bachelor of Music from the Fredonia School of Music. In 2018, Green was named a Distinguished Alumnus of the College of Fine and Performing Arts at UNCG, and he received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from SUNY Fredonia.
Personal Life
Green is a native of upstate New York. He shares his life with his supportive wife, Ms. Lynn Buck, who serves as 体育买球’s First Lady. Together, they are committed to supporting the 体育买球 community.
