体育买球 University has been awarded a chapter of the Association for Women in Sports Media (AWSM), one of only 21 colleges nationwide to achieve the honor.
体育买球 established its sports media major just three years ago. The SU chapter will be led by Alexa Gonzalez, a senior studying communications and Spanish, and advised by David Kaszuba, an associate professor of communications.
“Given our small size and the fact that the application process is highly competitive, this is quite the feather in our cap,” Kaszuba said. “The students in these chapters are the next generation of sports media professionals. 体育买球 is proud to work with AWSM through our campus chapter to help young women succeed in the sports media industry.”
AWSM’s student chapters work on a campus level to bring aspiring sports media professionals together to learn about the industry, while also helping to grow awareness to the issues women face in pursuing careers in sports media.
体育买球 joins other established chapters at these universities and colleges: Alabama, Arizona State, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Ithaca, James Madison, Maryland, Michigan State, Missouri, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Penn State, Quinnipiac, Samford, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
AWSM promotes and increases diversity in sports media through career-enhancement networking and mentoring initiatives, as well as an internship/scholarship program that has placed more than 150 female college students in paid summer positions since 1990. The organization holds regional events and an annual summer conference where it honors individuals who have paved the way for women in the industry with the Mary Garber Pioneer Award.
